Severe Weather Alert: Damaging Winds Hit WA Tonight

UPDATE: Intense winds are currently battering Western Australia, prompting a severe weather warning from the Bureau of Meteorology for the South West and Lower West regions. The alert was issued this evening as a cold front moves across the state, bringing potentially damaging wind gusts.

According to the latest reports, gusts could reach up to 100 km/h in key areas including Mandurah, Bunbury, Margaret River, and Windy Harbour. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions as severe weather conditions are expected to bring gusty showers and moderate rainfall, along with isolated thunderstorms in the far southwest.

The cold front is on track to hit the Southwest Capes around sunset, moving swiftly along the west coast and expected to reach Perth by mid-evening. Winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h will accompany the front, with the most damaging conditions anticipated shortly after its passage. These dangerous winds pose risks not only to property but also to personal safety.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued crucial safety advice for residents:

– Seek shelter indoors away from trees and power lines.
– Close curtains and blinds, and stay away from windows.
– Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones during lightning.
– Stay alert for hazards such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
– Keep clear of flooded areas, drains, rivers, and streams.
– Treat all fallen power lines as live and dangerous.

In the event of significant damage to homes, residents are advised to contact the SES at 132 500 for assistance.

As conditions evolve, authorities will provide further updates on weather warnings. Residents are strongly encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and the Bureau of Meteorology’s website. This is a developing situation, and the community’s safety hinges on timely action and vigilance.

Stay safe and take these warnings seriously—strong winds can arrive suddenly, causing dangerous conditions that may affect your safety and property.
