Costco has confirmed plans to open its fifth warehouse in Victoria, Australia, by 2027. This new location will be situated at a logistics centre in Pakenham, located in the rapidly developing south-east of Melbourne. Currently, Costco operates a total of 15 warehouses across Australia, positioning itself as a smaller competitor in the retail landscape dominated by major players such as Coles and Woolworths.
The journey for Costco Australia began in 2009 with the opening of its first store in Melbourne’s Docklands. At that time, there were uncertainties about whether Australian consumers would embrace an American retail model that requires an annual membership fee and features a limited selection of products. In the years since, Costco has proven its appeal, particularly among shoppers residing near its warehouses. The retailer’s bulk offerings and affordable food court meals, such as its popular hot dogs, have gained a loyal following.
Membership Growth and Financial Success
Today, approximately 1.5 million Australians hold Costco memberships, with warehouses now present in every state and territory except Tasmania. Membership fees are currently set at $65 for a standard account and $130 for a business account. Over the past year, Costco Australia has reported significant financial gains, including a remarkable 46% increase in profits, a trend attributed in part to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Chris Tingman, Country Manager for Costco Australia, shared insights into the company’s expansion strategy. He emphasized that the selection of new warehouse locations focuses on proximity to members and the availability of adequate space to accommodate a diverse range of products and services. “We are pleased with Costco’s steady growth within Australia and plan to continue reviewing new opportunities to open more warehouses in the future,” Tingman stated.
As Costco continues to carve out its niche in the Australian market, the company remains committed to enhancing its offerings and expanding its footprint. The anticipated Pakenham warehouse is expected to further solidify Costco’s presence in a competitive retail environment, offering consumers additional choices for bulk shopping and value-driven products.
