Key Insights on Running Back Rankings for 2025 Fantasy Football

As the 2025 fantasy football season approaches, analysts are providing insights on player rankings to aid managers in their draft strategies. According to ESPN’s fantasy expert Eric Karabell, a tiered ranking system offers a clearer perspective on the value of running backs beyond traditional rankings. This method allows fantasy managers to assess where significant drops in talent occur, making it easier to navigate the complexities of drafts and salary cap formats.

Karabell’s tiered rankings are designed for 10-team leagues using standard PPR (points per reception) scoring. The first tier features standout players such as Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons, Jahmyr Gibbs from the Detroit Lions, and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles. With these players, enthusiasts may feel tempted to secure one of them as their first overall pick. However, Karabell notes that he is prioritizing Ja’Marr Chase, a wide receiver from the Cincinnati Bengals, before selecting a running back due to the potential risks associated with Barkley’s past injury history and extensive usage in the previous season.

Evaluating the Second and Third Tiers

In the second tier, which spans the second and third rounds, Karabell includes Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens and Jonathan Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts, among others. These players displayed strong statistical production last season and are seen as reliable options. The third tier features Christian McCaffrey, who is recognized as a top-tier talent but has faced durability challenges. Karabell places McCaffrey on his “Do Not Draft” list due to concerns about his health, suggesting he should only be considered in the third round despite his previous dominance.

Understanding Risks in the Lower Tiers

The subsequent tiers, ranging from four to eleven, introduce players with varying degrees of reliability. For instance, in the fourth tier, Chase Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals and Kyren Williams from the Los Angeles Rams are notable names, although doubts linger regarding their consistency. Similarly, in tier five, Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints is coming off a solid season, but his role in 2025 remains uncertain.

As the rankings progress, it becomes evident that question marks surround several players. For example, Joe Mixon of the Houston Texans is currently dealing with an ankle injury, which may impede his availability for the season’s start. In contrast, Tony Pollard from the Tennessee Titans is healthy, yet his situation is complicated by a potential timeshare with teammate Tyjae Spears.

Karabell emphasizes the importance of preparation, urging fantasy managers to create their own rankings and to combine statistical analysis with instinct. He highlights that while mock drafts can help identify talent drop-offs, the rankings will be updated as news unfolds throughout August. This proactive approach will ensure that fantasy managers are equipped to make informed decisions on draft day, maximizing their chances of success in the upcoming season.
