South Coast Chef Sentenced After Drunken Assault, Job Lost

UPDATE: South Coast chef Michael Donovan has been sentenced following a shocking drunken assault that led to his abrupt departure from his job. In an urgent court session at Narooma Local Court on August 14, 2023, the 59-year-old pleaded guilty to common assault and failing to vacate the premises.

The incident unfolded on Anzac Day, when Donovan, after a shift at work, was refused service due to excessive alcohol consumption. Defying the request to leave, he later attacked a victim in a nearby car park. The altercation resulted in Donovan injuring his arm, necessitating hospital treatment.

Donovan’s solicitor, Marianna Ypma, described the assault as “out of character,” noting Donovan’s commitment to addressing his alcohol problems since the incident. “This has really shocked Mr. Donovan,” she stated, adding that he has not consumed alcohol since that fateful day.

The emotional fallout from the incident has been profound. Ypma revealed that Donovan’s daughter, a psychologist, provided him with “stern words” about his behavior. Despite his professional work ethic, the assault cost him his job, leaving him feeling embarrassed and remorseful.

“He’s had to explain his conduct to past and potential employers,” Ypma said, emphasizing Donovan’s intent to improve himself after relocating to Mudgee in search of new employment.

Magistrate Doug Dick delivered a verdict that included two small fines of $500 each for the assaults. He acknowledged the incident’s significant impact on Donovan’s life, stating, “It was a night I’m sure you’d like to forget.”

The ramifications of this assault extend beyond the courtroom. Donovan’s journey towards recovery and redemption is just beginning, as he faces the challenge of rebuilding his life and reputation in a new town.

As this story develops, it serves as a reminder of the profound effects that one night of poor judgment can have on an individual’s life and career. Stay tuned for further updates on Donovan’s path to recovery and potential job opportunities.
