URGENT UPDATE: Wyndham has officially joined the inaugural Victorian Wheelchair Basketball League, set to launch on September 13, 2025, in Bendigo. This groundbreaking league will feature mixed-gender teams and welcome both able-bodied and wheelchair athletes, fostering an inclusive atmosphere for players of all abilities.
The league is a significant leap forward for inclusive sports in Victoria, emphasizing skill development and sportsmanship. Basketball Victoria confirms that this initiative aims to bridge the gap between introductory clinics and elite competition, providing a structured platform for wheelchair athletes to excel.
Wyndham is one of six teams participating, alongside Bendigo, Frankston, Geelong, Kilsyth, and Diamond Valley. Following the opening round in Bendigo, subsequent matches will take place in Geelong on September 20, Kilsyth on October 4, and the State Basketball Centre on October 11.
Sheena Atkins, Basketball Victoria’s diversity and inclusion manager, describes this league as a major milestone.
“It’s not just about growing the game – it’s about strengthening the athlete pathway and providing more competitive opportunities at every level,”
she stated.
Wyndham Basketball Association’s general manager, Jason Kelly, expressed enthusiasm about joining the league. “It’s much needed, and it’s nice to have a side this side of the West Gate Bridge,” he said. “This offers extra ways for people to get involved in the sport. We are dedicated to inclusion and have high-level coaches ready to lead.”
Kelly revealed that tryouts for the team will be announced soon, with details to be shared on the club’s social media platforms. He emphasized that anyone interested in playing at a higher level, or those new to the sport, are encouraged to participate.
This league not only marks a historic moment for Wyndham but also highlights the urgent need for more competitive opportunities in wheelchair basketball across Victoria. As the countdown to the first game begins, the excitement is palpable.
