Israel Strikes Houthi Energy Site Near Sanaa Amid Ongoing Tensions

The Israeli military conducted an airstrike on an energy infrastructure site used by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement south of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, on Sunday. This operation targeted the Haziz power station in response to ongoing missile attacks from the Houthis aimed at Israel. According to a statement from the Israeli military, these actions were necessary to counter what they described as repeated provocations by the Houthi forces.

Israeli media reported that the strike was executed by the Israeli navy. Following the attack, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV referred to the incident as an “aggression,” confirming damage to several generators at the power station. The network did not specify the source of the attack. Firefighters were able to control a blaze that resulted from the strike, as reported by the deputy prime minister of the Houthi administration. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties from this incident.

Continued Escalation and Regional Impact

Residents of Sanaa reported hearing at least two explosions during the incident, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region. The Israeli military has intensified its operations in Yemen as a direct response to Houthi missile launches targeting Israeli territory, which the group claims are in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In recent developments, Israel issued evacuation warnings for civilians near three Yemeni ports. This precautionary measure came after an attack on a ship off the coast of Hodeidah, which resulted in the crew abandoning the vessel. Although most Houthi missile strikes have been intercepted, the group continues to assert its commitment to support Palestinian causes through its military actions against Israel.

Earlier this year, in May, the United States brokered a deal with the Houthis, agreeing to cease its bombing campaign against them in exchange for a halt to the group’s attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. However, the Houthis clarified that this agreement did not include a cessation of hostilities directed at Israel.

Israel’s ongoing military response reflects the complex interplay of regional politics and the broader implications of the conflict, with the potential to impact international shipping routes and security measures in the Red Sea. The situation remains fluid, with both Israeli and Houthi forces poised for further confrontations as tensions continue to rise.
