Hamas Accepts Ceasefire Proposal as Gaza’s Death Toll Surges Past 62,000

Hamas has formally accepted a ceasefire proposal put forward by Arab mediators, as the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing conflict in Gaza surpasses 62,000. The announcement comes amidst a backdrop of ongoing tension, with Israel maintaining its stance on military operations in the region. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the negotiations being led by Washington.

The conflict, which has persisted for 22 months, has resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported a current death toll of 62,004, with an additional 156,230 individuals injured. The ministry, which operates under the Hamas-led government, claims that women and children constitute approximately half of the casualties, though the specific numbers of civilians versus combatants remain unclear.

In recent developments, Israeli officials announced plans to reoccupy Gaza City and other densely populated areas, a move that has raised concerns about further humanitarian catastrophes. Many experts warn that Gaza is on the brink of famine, exacerbated by the ongoing military offensive. As tensions escalate, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets, demanding the return of hostages taken during the initial attack on October 7, 2023, which marked the beginning of the current war.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty indicated that mediators are tirelessly working to revive a previous US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire. This ceasefire would facilitate the release of some of the remaining hostages and allow for negotiations toward a more permanent resolution. Abdelatty noted that US envoy Steve Witkoff has been invited to join the discussions. He made these comments while visiting the Rafah border crossing, which has not been operational since May 2024.

Hamas has reportedly accepted the proposal from mediators, although specific details have not been disclosed. An Egyptian official, speaking under the condition of anonymity, outlined that the proposal includes adjustments regarding Israel’s military presence and assurances for future negotiations.

Despite Hamas’s acceptance of the proposal, an Israeli official stated that Israel’s positions regarding the release of all hostages have not changed. This sentiment was echoed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who emphasized that the military campaign would continue until all hostages are freed and Hamas is disarmed. He characterized Hamas’s acceptance of the ceasefire proposal as indicative of the group’s “massive pressure.”

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with reports of rising malnutrition-related deaths. Gaza’s Health Ministry stated that at least 112 children and 151 adults have died from malnutrition since the onset of hostilities. The UN and various independent experts regard the ministry’s casualty figures as the most reliable estimates available, despite Israel’s ongoing disputes over these numbers.

In response to the growing crisis, the Israeli military has announced plans to provide shelter equipment to displaced individuals, aiming to relocate them from conflict zones to safer areas in southern Gaza. As the situation unfolds, organizations like Amnesty International have accused Israel of conducting a campaign of starvation, a claim that Israel has firmly rejected, asserting that sufficient food supplies have been allowed into the territory.

The UN World Food Programme reported that community kitchens in Gaza produced approximately 380,000 meals daily last week, a substantial decrease from over 1 million daily meals in April. The ongoing blockade and military operations have severely limited access to food and essential services for the population.

As international mediators continue their efforts to broker a ceasefire, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains dire, raising urgent questions about the future of the region and the safety of its inhabitants.
