American Signature Furniture and its sister brand, Value City Furniture, will close all their retail locations as part of a liquidation process following a bankruptcy filing. This decision marks the end of a nearly eight-decade legacy in the furniture retail industry, driven by significant financial difficulties within the sector.
As of November 2025, American Signature Inc. (ASI) initiated Chapter 11 voluntary protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the District of Delaware. At that time, the company operated 89 stores across 13 states, including 79 Value City Furniture outlets and 10 American Signature Furniture locations. The bankruptcy court has appointed SB360 Capital Partners, Hilco Global, and Gordon Brothers to facilitate Going Out of Business sales at these stores.
Liquidation sales are currently underway, featuring discounts of up to 50% on a wide range of products, including living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture, mattresses, rugs, lighting, and home décor. Customers can access a list of participating locations through ASI’s website. Meanwhile, five stores previously scheduled for closure are still conducting sales, offering even deeper discounts.
Financial Challenges and Store Closures
The closures stem from a combination of operational and financial challenges that have increasingly affected the furniture retail industry. The Chapter 11 filing allows for an orderly cessation of operations, but does not include plans to reorganize or reopen stores under the current brand names. In a statement, the company cited declining sales volume post-pandemic as a primary factor contributing to its financial struggles.
Other contributing elements include a downturn in the housing market, rising inflation, elevated interest rates, and newly imposed tariffs. The significant build-up of liabilities has necessitated liquidation efforts both in-store and online, with discounts varying by location and inventory levels.
The impact of these closures extends beyond the stores themselves, affecting customers with outstanding orders, warranties, or store credits. Many customers have reported delays in fulfilling pending orders and challenges in obtaining refunds. During the liquidation period, ASI has advised shoppers to consult store-specific policies, as terms for returns, deliveries, and services may vary across locations. Additionally, customers are cautioned that gift cards and financing agreements might have time limitations as the stores prepare to close.
Customer Impact and Future Outlook
Despite the turmoil, SB360 President Aaron Miller described the liquidation sale as “unprecedented.” He emphasized the importance of shopping early during this limited-time event, noting that the compelling discounts on stylish furniture will lead to a rapid depletion of inventory.
The closure of American Signature Furniture and Value City Furniture signifies a pivotal moment in U.S. retail, reflecting the broader challenges faced by traditional retailers amid evolving consumer preferences and economic pressures. As these well-known brands exit the market, the future of furniture retail continues to remain uncertain, with shifting dynamics prompting both challenges and opportunities for remaining competitors.
