On March 15, 2023, Croatian President Zoran Milanović awarded the prestigious Charter of the Republic of Croatia to the WA Croatian Chamber of Commerce (WACCC) during a ceremony held at the President’s Office in Zagreb. The award was accepted by Luke Jurčević, the President of the WACCC, marking a significant recognition of the Chamber’s two decades of dedicated service in promoting trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Croatia and Australia.
Recognizing the Croatian Diaspora
In his address, President Milanović emphasized the vital role of the Croatian diaspora in Australia. He pointed out that despite the geographical distance from their homeland, many Croats have established fulfilling lives and successful businesses in Australia. “They live a life worthy of human dignity and work tirelessly to connect the economies of Croatia and Australia,” he stated.
He acknowledged the complexities involved in fostering economic ties with a robust economy like Australia’s. “Australia is a great country and a great economy. It requires significant effort and patience. Many seeds must be sown for something to eventually grow,” he remarked. Milanović expressed his gratitude to the Chamber for its persistent efforts and urged them to continue serving as a model for Croatian communities around the globe.
WACCC’s Commitment to Economic Cooperation
The WACCC has played a crucial role in promoting Croatia as a desirable destination for investment over the past twenty years. The Chamber has organized various business delegations and facilitated connections between Croatian and Australian entrepreneurs. Their recent initiatives include the Croatian Film Festival in Perth, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of Croatia.
Upon receiving the Charter, Jurčević conveyed his appreciation on behalf of the Chamber and its members, stating, “This recognition is a great honour for our Chamber and for the entire Croatian community in Western Australia. It confirms that two decades of voluntary work, dedication, and belief in the strength of Croatian–Australian economic cooperation have been worthwhile.” He reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to building bridges between the two nations and enhancing Croatia’s profile as a reliable partner for trade and investment.
The WACCC also serves an important role in community life, actively participating in events such as the Croatian Statehood Day celebrations in Perth. They have organized cultural events like the Croatian Wine Festival and initiatives that promote the contributions of Croatian women to the Western Australian economy.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the Australian Ambassador to Croatia, Richard Rodgers, and David Tudorović, the Honorary Croatian Consul to South Australia. Additionally, Zoran Šangut, the Croatian Consul in Perth, and Logan Howlett, Mayor of the City of Cockburn in Western Australia, were present to celebrate this significant occasion.
This recognition underscores the ongoing efforts of the WACCC to strengthen ties between Croatia and Australia, highlighting the importance of collaboration in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
