Iconic Cadet Restaurant in Kittanning to Close After 73 Years

The historic Cadet Restaurant in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, will close its doors for the final time on December 31, 2023, after an impressive 73-year run. Known for its vintage atmosphere and signature dishes, the restaurant has been a cherished part of the community since its founding in 1952 by George Morda.

In a heartfelt announcement shared on social media, the restaurant expressed deep gratitude to its loyal patrons, stating, “To all of our customers—and the customers who became family—we love you more than words can say. This place means everything to us.” The Cadet Restaurant will serve its last meal at 15:00 on New Year’s Eve, marking the end of an era for both the establishment and its many devoted customers.

A local favorite, the Cadet gained fame for its Poorboy burgers and unique offerings like blueberry lemon pancakes and hearty steak and fries. The restaurant’s quirky charm included a 30-foot-tall cowboy statue named Sam, which became an iconic symbol for the eatery. For generations, it was not just a place to dine but a gathering spot that shaped the lives of many local families.

Legacy and Community Impact

The Cadet Restaurant’s closure has prompted an outpouring of emotion from the community. One loyal customer expressed sorrow, saying, “It’s so sad that the Cadet will be gone. It’s a piece of Armstrong County history and holds a special place in many of our hearts.” This sentiment encapsulates the restaurant’s significance, as it fostered countless memories for those who dined there over the decades.

The restaurant originally opened as The Owl’s Nest and became a popular destination for car enthusiasts, thanks to its tradition of hosting car cruises. With support from the KITT-HAN-NE Region of the AACA of America Car Club, these events became a vital part of the restaurant’s identity, bringing together community members and car lovers alike.

In a poignant reflection on their journey, the Cadet team stated, “When we revived this place in 2021, the very last thing we ever imagined was having to say goodbye like this.” The closure announcement comes as a surprise to many, highlighting the deep emotional ties residents have formed with the restaurant throughout its long history.

A Fond Farewell

As the Cadet Restaurant prepares for its final day, the community is left to reminisce about the shared experiences that occurred within its walls. The restaurant, a beloved institution, has been more than just a business; it has served as a home for many, fostering connections that span generations.

The end of the Cadet’s operations signifies not only the loss of a dining option but also the conclusion of a local landmark that represented nostalgia and community spirit. As fans reflect on their memories, the legacy of the Cadet Restaurant will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the hearts of its loyal customers.
