Playa Bowls Expands to Memphis with New Edge District Location

Playa Bowls, a popular franchise known for its vibrant superfruit bowls, is set to open a new location in Memphis’ Edge District. The establishment will be situated at 732 Madison Ave., Suite 109, within a three-story mixed-use commercial building. This new 997-square-foot shop aims to cater to the growing demand for healthy food options in the area.

Franchise owner Amy Lupo is actively pursuing a $30,000 grant from the Center City Development Corporation, an affiliate of the Downtown Memphis Commission. The grant is intended for essential improvements including plumbing, electrical work, lighting, HVAC, flooring, and the installation of a bar and counter. The overall budget for this project is estimated at $430,000, with the grant request scheduled for review on July 16, 2024.

Lupo, who has a background in the food industry, also owns multiple Nothing Bundt Cakes franchises in Memphis. She and her boyfriend, Jack Speed, discovered Playa Bowls during a vacation in Delray Beach, Florida. Impressed by the concept and atmosphere, they initially thought it was a local establishment. After learning it was a franchise, they decided to bring the Playa Bowls experience to Tennessee. In 2024, they launched the state’s first Playa Bowls location in East Memphis and plan to open additional outlets in Arlington and Collierville.

In her grant application, Lupo expressed enthusiasm for the Edge District, stating, “The day we toured the Edge District, we knew it was a natural home for Playa Bowls. It’s dynamic, growing, and full of energy — exactly the kind of environment where Playa thrives.” She emphasized her commitment to community engagement through job creation and mentorship.

Playa Bowls offers a diverse menu featuring superfruit bowls, smoothies, and fresh juices made with health-conscious ingredients. Signature offerings include bases like acai, pitaya, coconut, banana, and greens, topped with granola, almond butter, honey, and fresh fruit. The menu also includes oatmeal, cold brew coffee, and fresh-pressed juices, with many items accommodating gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan diets. This variety positions Playa Bowls as an appealing option for customers looking for a quick breakfast, a post-workout snack, or a refreshing treat.

Construction for the new location is expected to commence in either September or October 2024, with an anticipated opening in January or February 2026. As the project progresses, further updates will be provided to keep the community informed about Playa Bowls’ expansion in Memphis.
