The appointment of Andrew McKeegan as South Australia’s new Coordinator-General has been welcomed by the South Australian Division of the Property Council. This decision is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the urgent need for effective coordination of enabling infrastructure, essential for unlocking employment land and housing projects in the region.
Bruce Djite, the Executive Director of the Property Council, expressed confidence in Mr. McKeegan’s extensive background in planning, transport, and infrastructure. Djite emphasized that despite this positive development, significant challenges remain ahead. “Andrew’s appointment is a positive step forward. He brings a wealth of experience and credibility to the table, but we cannot underestimate the challenges ahead,” he stated.
South Australia faces mounting pressure, with less than two years of development-ready employment land available. The state is committed to the National Housing Accord, which aims to deliver 16,500 homes per year. Yet, current housing projects are hindered by delays in the rollout of crucial enabling infrastructure, including water, sewer, energy, and transport links.
New Role Aims to Streamline Approvals
The newly created position of Coordinator-General is intended to streamline project approvals and address inter-agency obstacles for initiatives of both state and national importance. This includes not only housing developments but also pivotal projects related to AUKUS and the transition toward a net-zero economy.
Djite highlighted the potential of McKeegan’s role to significantly impact South Australia’s growth trajectory. “This role has the potential to be transformative for South Australia, but success will be judged by delivery on the ground, not announcements,” he remarked.
The industry is keen to collaborate with Mr. McKeegan and the government to eliminate barriers and expedite the construction necessary for sustainable and competitive growth in the region. Djite reiterated the commitment to work alongside the new Coordinator-General, emphasizing that real changes must translate into tangible economic benefits for all South Australians.
As the clock ticks down on development timelines, the urgency for effective infrastructure coordination has never been more critical. The challenges are substantial, but the appointment of Andrew McKeegan may well be a pivotal moment for the future of South Australia’s infrastructure and housing landscape.
