Tim Abbott, a 32-year-old from Sydney, has traded the bustling city life for a slower pace in Queensland, motivated by the ongoing cost of living crisis. After relocating nearly 800 kilometers west of Brisbane, Abbott has found a new home on a private-lease logging property and cattle farm in the Maranoa region. He originally set out in July 2022 for a temporary “financial gap year,” but now considers a permanent move.
Facing skyrocketing living costs in Sydney, Abbott’s rent doubled over three years, consuming a significant portion of his income. “It created a sense of fear about when this was going to end,” he explained. His decision to leave his job in digital marketing was not made lightly; it took him six to eight weeks to resign and prepare for the move.
With limited experience in agriculture, Abbott accepted this new role on the advice of a friend. “I come from an agricultural background, but I had never worked in it,” he noted. He found encouragement in the belief that if he could drive a car, he could learn to operate a tractor. His initial intention was to stay for just twelve months, aiming to save money for a house deposit.
Life in Queensland: Savings and a New Perspective
Documenting his experiences on Instagram, Abbott originally aimed to save $100,000 during his time in Queensland. Although he now anticipates saving between $70,000 and $80,000, he credits the inclusion of accommodation and expenses as key factors in his financial success. “Living in Sydney, there are so many options for spending money,” he remarked. “Here, we’re an hour and a half from the closest shops.”
Beyond financial benefits, Abbott’s time in Queensland has shifted his worldview. He described the lifestyle in the region as reminiscent of the early 2000s, not in terms of technology, but in its slower pace. “The cost of living, although still high, is significantly cheaper than Sydney,” he said. He emphasized that he no longer desires the fast-paced life associated with urban living.
While Abbott feels a connection to Queensland, he also wishes to find a location closer to urban amenities. He expressed interest in cities like Toowoomba or Dalby after completing his year in agriculture, as he wants to return to city life while maintaining the benefits of a rural lifestyle.
Future Aspirations and Reflection
Abbott plans to study psychology after his gap year. He highlighted the irony of having made three trips back to Sydney since moving to Queensland, stating, “Those three return flights have been cheaper than one week’s rent in Sydney.” He finds it financially sensible to live in Queensland while flying back when necessary.
Despite his intention to eventually return to the city, Abbott aims to carry the lessons learned from his rural experience with him. “Living in the country has taught me about the pace of life,” he shared. “There’s a false sense of urgency in the city, but I’ve adopted a slower rhythm, which is refreshing.”
As Abbott continues his journey in Queensland, he remains focused on his goals and the new lifestyle he has embraced, demonstrating how a change in environment can lead to significant personal growth and a reevaluation of life’s priorities.
