Yama in SouthPark Closes for Renovations, Set to Reopen in May

Yama, the popular Asian fusion restaurant located at 720 Governor Morrison St. #E130 in SouthPark, has announced a temporary closure for renovations. Owner Birdie Yang informed What Now Charlotte that the restaurant is targeting a reopening in May.

Having served the community for 19 years, Yama aims to “renovate, refresh, and re-imagine everything” to enhance the dining experience for its loyal customer base. The announcement on the restaurant’s website highlights a commitment to modernizing the space.

Exciting Changes Ahead

The upcoming renovations promise to present a fresh take on the restaurant’s ambiance. Renderings shared on Yama’s Instagram page feature inviting wood accents, neutral tones, and a redesigned bar area. Yang expressed enthusiasm about the changes, stating, “We can’t wait to welcome you back this May — brighter, better and more inspired than ever.” This reflects a clear intention to elevate the dining atmosphere and cater to evolving customer preferences.

Yama is part of a larger brand that includes Yama Loso and Yama Waverly. In addition to managing these locations, Yang oversees another establishment, Baku, which is scheduled to close in April along Sharon Road, as well as Sora. This indicates a broader strategy as Yang navigates the competitive dining landscape.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Yang is considering exploring new culinary concepts, which may involve expanding into different cuisines. “Yama is established enough where we might have another location and that’s it,” Yang noted. “We’re in other concepts too, so we might grow out to different concepts.” This statement underscores Yang’s ambition to diversify the brand while maintaining Yama’s reputation within the community.

As the renovation period progresses, patrons of Yama can look forward to a revitalized experience that reflects both the restaurant’s heritage and Yang’s vision for the future. The anticipation surrounding the reopening in May indicates that Yama will continue to be a beloved fixture in SouthPark for years to come.
