On February 3, 2026, a significant operation led by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) resulted in the seizure of over 57,000 illegal vaping products in Burwood, New South Wales. This enforcement action, supported by the New South Wales Police Force and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), targeted a commercial storage facility linked to an alleged illegal supply chain of vaping goods.
The operation followed the execution of several search warrants and the inspection of two vehicles associated with the storage site. Investigations into the seized products are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further enforcement actions may be imminent. This coordinated effort illustrates a strong commitment to combatting the illegal vaping trade, sending a clear message to individuals and businesses attempting to profit from the distribution of unauthorized vaping products.
Legal Context and Penalties
Under current Australian law, only participating pharmacies are permitted to sell vaping products. Retailers, including tobacconists and convenience stores, face significant legal repercussions for non-compliance. Violations of the vaping-related provisions of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 can lead to severe penalties, including up to seven years of imprisonment and fines reaching $2.31 million AUD for individuals, and $23.1 million AUD for corporations per offence.
Since the implementation of stringent vaping reforms, the TGA has collaborated with the Australian Border Force (ABF), state and territory health departments, and various police agencies. Collectively, they have conducted 48 joint activities aimed at disrupting and dismantling the illegal vaping market across Australia.
Call for Public Assistance
The TGA has urged the public to assist in these enforcement efforts by reporting any information related to the illegal supply of vaping products. Individuals can submit reports through the TGA’s official website. For those seeking support to quit smoking or vaping, the TGA recommends consulting with a healthcare professional or reaching out to Quitline at 13 78 48 (13 QUIT). Additionally, the My QuitBuddy App is available for download to help users manage their quitting journey.
Authorities emphasize that community collaboration is vital in addressing the challenges posed by illegal vaping products. The recent seizure underscores the ongoing commitment to public health and safety, reinforcing that violations will not be tolerated in Australia.
