Three bushwalkers were successfully rescued from Lake Rhona in Tasmania’s remote southwest region following an emergency alert activated by a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) shortly after 01:00 on March 15, 2024. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the area to assist in the operation, and due to favourable weather conditions, the helicopter crew was able to reach the location quickly.
Upon arrival at the scene, the rescue team found the trio cold and wet but otherwise unharmed. They were airlifted to Strathgordon, where they received further assistance. The prompt action taken by the bushwalkers in activating the PLB was crucial in ensuring their safe recovery.
The incident highlights the importance of safety precautions when exploring remote wilderness areas. Police officials stress the necessity for outdoor enthusiasts to carry appropriate safety equipment, including a PLB, to facilitate swift rescue operations in emergencies.
