Major Operation Nighthawk Leads to Arrest of 51 Offenders in Hume

More than 50 individuals were arrested during a significant law enforcement operation aimed at tackling car theft and reckless driving in Hume, Australia. Operation Nighthawk, which ran from December 7 to 10, 2023, resulted in 51 arrests and the recovery of several stolen vehicles. The operation involved a collaboration between local police, detectives, the Dog Squad, and the Air Wing, all working together to disrupt criminal activities in the area.

Among those apprehended was a 21-year-old man from Fawkner, who was allegedly driving a stolen Porsche that had been taken during an aggravated burglary in Hawthorn two years prior. In a separate incident, a teenager was arrested after being observed driving an alleged stolen vehicle at speeds reaching up to 240 km/h. This teenager reportedly attempted to commit another aggravated burglary while being tracked by the police Air Wing.

Focus on High-Risk Areas

Operation Nighthawk targeted various locations across Hume, including Broadmeadows, Coolaroo, Craigieburn, Mickleham, Meadow Heights, and Roxburgh Park. The operation was structured around a Police Operations Centre, where officers coordinated resources and strategized interventions based on real-time intelligence.

Over the course of the operation, police recovered seven stolen cars and impounded an additional 11 vehicles due to driving offences. The initiative aims not only to apprehend offenders but also to prevent future crimes by targeting individuals who are driving recklessly or in stolen vehicles.

Hume Local Area Commander, Inspector Olivia Freeman, emphasized the importance of the operation, stating, “The success of Operation Nighthawk is not just in our arrests; it’s the crime we have disrupted and stopped from happening in the first place.” She highlighted the ongoing impacts of car theft and reckless driving, noting that many of those arrested are often seeking to commit further offences.

Community Safety as a Priority

Inspector Freeman reiterated the commitment of law enforcement to the safety of the community, stating, “This kind of reckless behaviour on our roads remains firmly in our sights, and we won’t be slowing down our efforts.” She expressed confidence in the dedication of officers in Hume, who are determined to protect local residents.

As Operation Nighthawk continues to run sporadically across the northern suburbs, authorities remain vigilant and prepared to address any further criminal activities. The operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to enhance community safety and reduce the prevalence of car theft and dangerous driving in the region.
