New AI Tools Risk Flood of Corporate-Influenced Research

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in research could lead to an increase in studies that prioritize corporate interests over scientific integrity. A historical case highlights this concern: in the 2000s, pharmaceutical company Wyeth faced lawsuits from thousands of women who developed breast cancer after using its hormone replacement therapy. Court documents revealed that Wyeth had employed a medical communications firm to produce ghostwritten articles, which were published under the names of reputable doctors. This practice obscured the company’s influence, misleading healthcare professionals who relied on these publications for prescribing guidance.

After acquiring Wyeth in 2009, Pfizer was ultimately forced to pay over $1 billion in damages related to the hormone therapy’s adverse effects. This scandal exemplified a phenomenon known as “resmearch,” where misleading studies are crafted to support corporate agendas rather than uncover genuine scientific truths. The emergence of AI technology poses a significant risk of amplifying such practices by making it easier and cheaper to generate research outputs.

The past few years have seen a troubling trend, with companies in various sectors, including soft drinks and meat production, funding studies that downplay health risks. The ability to produce research quickly using AI could exacerbate this situation. For instance, in just the first ten months of 2024, there were 190 single-factor studies published—a dramatic increase from an average of four per year between 2014 and 2021. While not all of these studies are motivated by corporate interests, the rapid production capabilities of AI create opportunities for companies to exploit findings that support their products.

New government guidance in the UK has further complicated this landscape. It encourages baby-food producers to make marketing claims about health benefits only if they can be substantiated by scientific evidence. While the intention is to promote consumer safety, this regulation may inadvertently drive firms to seek out AI-assisted studies to validate their claims, increasing the demand for potentially misleading research.

Challenges and Solutions for Maintaining Research Integrity

One critical challenge is that not all research undergoes rigorous peer review before being used to inform policy. An illustrative example occurred in 2021, when US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito cited a briefing paper from a Georgetown University academic, which was funded by a pro-gun nonprofit. The lack of transparency regarding the survey data used raises questions about the reliability of the findings, yet they have been referenced in legal arguments across the nation.

It is crucial for those relying on research to be cautious about unverified studies. Reforming the peer review process is equally important. Over the past decade, several initiatives have aimed to enhance the quality of peer review and reduce the likelihood of flawed studies entering the public domain. These measures include requiring researchers to publish their research plans before beginning work and ensuring that all steps taken during the research process are transparently reported.

Recent advancements also include a technique known as specification curve analysis, which tests the robustness of claimed relationships across different data interpretations. Many academic journals have begun adopting these reforms, mandating that authors disclose conflicts of interest, funding sources, and even the methodologies used in their studies.

Despite these efforts, the current peer review system is under significant strain. The deluge of AI-generated research could overwhelm reviewers, necessitating a mechanism that rewards thorough and high-quality assessments. Trust in science remains high, which is beneficial for societal progress. However, the proliferation of AI-generated research threatens to undermine this trust.

To maintain the credibility of scientific inquiry, it is essential to incentivize meaningful peer review processes. David Comerford, who is currently funded by Open Philanthropy to design a system that promotes timely peer review, emphasizes the urgency of this need. Past funding from organizations such as UKRI, IDRC, and the Chief Scientist’s Office of the Scottish Government further illustrates his commitment to addressing these challenges.

In summary, while AI holds the potential to advance research capabilities, unchecked, it may also facilitate the spread of corporate-influenced findings that distort scientific truth. Addressing these risks through robust peer review and transparency is vital for preserving the integrity of scientific research in the era of AI.
