Police Rescue Two Stranded Men After Flood Incident Near Ngukurr

The Northern Territory Police Force successfully rescued two men aged 55 and 62 who became stranded after their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters near Ngukurr on December 25, 2023. The rescue operation began on December 28, when the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports that the men were located at Boomerang Lagoon Outstation, approximately 51 kilometres northeast of Ngukurr.

On Christmas Day, a vehicle carrying four adult males attempted to cross a flooded creek on the Numbulwar Access Road. The floodwaters overwhelmed the vehicle, forcing all occupants to exit safely. Two of the men walked back to Ngukurr to alert authorities, while the remaining two stayed at the outstation. Local police confirmed that the roads leading into the area were impassable due to the flooding.

In response, additional resources were requested to assist with the search operation. On December 28, a helicopter with Ngukurr police was deployed to locate the stranded individuals. The helicopter successfully spotted the two men approximately six kilometres from Boomerang Lagoon Outstation. They were subsequently transported back to Ngukurr for assessment at the local health clinic.

The vehicle was observed by the helicopter, fully submerged in floodwaters. Acting Senior Sergeant Christopher Harden emphasized the positive outcome of the operation, stating, “Thankfully we had a great outcome here and there were no serious injuries.” He also issued a crucial reminder: “If the road is flooded, forget it. No destination is worth your life.”

This incident highlights the dangers of attempting to cross flooded roads and serves as a reminder of the importance of heeding safety warnings during adverse weather conditions. The Northern Territory Police continue to urge the public to prioritize safety and stay informed about local road conditions.
