Sydney Students Celebrate Year 12 Completion and New Beginnings

More than 75,000 high school students across New South Wales concluded their secondary education this week, marking the end of a significant chapter in their lives. As they prepare for their first Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams scheduled for October 16, 2023, many students are reflecting on their unique experiences during their final year.

Transition to Co-Education

This year’s graduating class includes Alper Cetin, who experienced a transformative educational journey as his school, Randwick Boys High School, merged with Randwick Girls High School to form the new co-educational Randwick High School. Initially surprised by the decision to combine the single-sex institutions, Cetin has embraced the change, describing his HSC year as filled with new experiences and excitement.

“It was chaotic at first, but we have settled in now,” Cetin explained. “It’s a lot of new experiences, and exciting really—a great way to spend my last year of school.” For its inaugural year, Randwick High maintained most Year 12 classes as single-sex, but plans to transition to fully co-educational lessons by 2026.

Cetin feels the merger has revitalized the school’s environment. He draws parallels between his current experience and his earlier years in primary school, stating, “Being in a co-ed school has a nostalgic feeling and I love it.” His enjoyment extends beyond academics; at lunchtime, he actively engages in soccer games with peers, including girls, which he finds reminiscent of the competitive spirit he had during his childhood.

Emotional Reflections

As the school year comes to a close, Cetin expresses a complex range of emotions about finishing school. He aspires to study physics at university and recognizes the significant milestone this transition represents. “It’s a real mixture of emotions,” he admitted, highlighting the bittersweet nature of leaving behind familiar routines and friendships.

This cohort of students, including Cetin, embodies the resilience and adaptability that characterized their educational experience during challenging times. As they prepare to step into the next phase of their lives, their stories reflect not only personal achievements but also the evolving landscape of education in a post-pandemic world.

With the first HSC exams approaching, students are poised to demonstrate their hard work and dedication. For many, including Alper Cetin, this final year has been a journey of growth, connection, and the promise of new beginnings.
