In a show of respect and adherence to cultural practices, Area Commander Herby Ngawhika joined kaumātua from the Tūhourangi iwi at Lake Tikitapu on January 10. Together, they performed a karakia, a traditional prayer or incantation, to lift the tapu off the lake and restore the wairua, or spirit, of the area. This act reflects the deep connection between the community and the natural environment, emphasizing the importance of honoring both the deceased and the location.
