UN Expert Condemns Myanmar Elections as Fraudulent and Illegitimate

The United Nations has condemned the recent parliamentary elections in Myanmar, labeling them as fraudulent and urging the international community to reject the results. Voting concluded over the weekend, with reports of intimidation and coercion surrounding the electoral process. Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, called on nations to dismiss any resulting power arrangements associated with the junta’s elections.

Andrews delivered a stark message regarding the elections, stating, “Sunday’s final day of balloting in the Myanmar junta’s fraudulent election scheme will hopefully bring relief to the people of Myanmar who have faced election-related intimidation, threats, arrest, and lengthy prison terms if they criticized the election or failed to participate.” He emphasized that while the election results within Myanmar may be predetermined, the crucial outcome lies in how the international community responds.

The junta’s strategy, according to Andrews, was designed to ensure a decisive victory for its political proxy. This involved banning legitimate opposition parties, imprisoning popular political figures, suppressing the press, and utilizing fear tactics to compel participation. “The junta is banking on the world’s fatigue, hoping that the international community will accept military rule dressed up in civilian clothing,” he remarked.

In his analysis, Andrews warned against potential arguments from junta allies who might downplay the election’s flaws by suggesting it signifies progress. He asserted that any international acceptance of the election would undermine efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. “Sustained international pressure is essential,” he stated, noting that the junta’s history of violence against civilians cannot be ignored.

The voting process, which included three phases, was marred by violence, low turnout, and widespread coercion. Voters reported feeling surveilled and pressured by local authorities, with certain repercussions for those who abstained. In a particularly distressing detail, Andrews noted that as military jets bombed villages, junta officials were still urging citizens to the polls.

Most foreign governments have recognized the farcical nature of the junta’s electoral exercise and refrained from sending observers. Andrews praised ASEAN for its recent statement from the Malaysian foreign minister, indicating that the organization will not certify the election results. He warned, “States that endorse the results of these polls will be complicit in the junta’s attempt to legitimate military rule through a fabricated vote.”

The Special Rapporteur urged the international community to increase efforts to isolate the junta and any emerging proxy government. He highlighted the necessity of cutting off the flow of weapons, aviation fuel, and funds that enable the military’s violent campaign against civilians. “The people of Myanmar have shown extraordinary courage in resisting military tyranny,” Andrews concluded. “They deserve a future decided by their will—not by a rigged process designed to keep their oppressors in power.”
