Actress and singer Amanda Seyfried recently shared insights into her latest project, ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’, which premiered today at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. This historical drama musical film, co-written and directed by Mona Fastvold, features Seyfried in the titular role, portraying Ann Lee, the 18th-century founder of the Christian sect known as the Shakers.
This film marks a significant moment for Seyfried, as it is her first on-screen singing performance since ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’. In discussing the film, she described it as “a celebration,” emphasizing its unique nature. Seyfried remarked, “It felt very brave, and it felt very scary. But once we were shooting, that lifted.” Her enthusiasm reflects the emotional depth she aimed to convey through her character.
In preparation for the film, Seyfried spent time in a studio in Budapest, where she recorded two main songs. She spoke about the collaborative atmosphere with Fastvold, recalling a moment where they shared the space with her dog, Finn, as she worked to capture the essence of Ann Lee’s grief. The experience of singing, Seyfried noted, is something she deeply enjoys, highlighting how it enriches her acting.
Throughout her career, Seyfried has gained recognition for her performances in various films, including ‘Jennifer’s Body’, ‘Les Misérables’, and ‘Mank’, for which she received nominations for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. In 2022, she won a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in the limited series ‘The Dropout’.
Looking ahead, Seyfried expressed her desire to explore comedy. She has a project titled ‘The Housemaid’ set for release, alongside a “huge tentpole movie” debuting on Christmas Day, featuring Sydney Sweeney. Seyfried described ‘The Housemaid’ as a film that brought her immense joy, stating, “I haven’t had that much fun in a theatre… I had a blast making it and playing this wacky, nutso character that no one has really seen me do.” She even humorously mentioned her eagerness to watch the film again after Christmas dinner.
As ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ continues to garner attention at the Venice Film Festival, Seyfried’s passion for her craft and her commitment to diverse roles remain evident. The film not only showcases her talent but also highlights the historical narrative of a significant figure in American religious history.
