Benny Safdie is set to create a family-friendly film titled Lizard Music, collaborating once again with actor Dwayne Johnson. The project, which aims to resonate with children and families, draws inspiration from Safdie’s previous work and personal experiences as a father.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Safdie expressed his motivation for the film, stating, “After [The Smashing Machine], if it works for you, you leave the theatre feeling something very filled up.” He emphasized the importance of conveying messages that inspire positivity and appreciation for life. With two sons of his own, Safdie desires to create a film that sparks meaningful conversations with his children.
Lizard Music is based on a novel by Daniel Pinkwater, featuring a story about a young boy who discovers a fantastical island inhabited by musical, sentient lizards. The boy partners with a character known as the Chicken Man, played by Johnson, embarking on an adventurous journey to this unique land. Safdie described the film as an opportunity to blend creativity with heartwarming themes.
Johnson’s Transformation for the Role
Dwayne Johnson recently shared insights into his preparation for the role, highlighting his physical transformation. In an interview with Variety, he revealed that he has been actively dieting to slim down for his portrayal of a 75-year-old character in Lizard Music. Johnson remarked, “I feel good I’m able to tuck in my shirt now,” emphasizing the benefits of his weight loss.
The former professional wrestler noted that he had previously gained 30 pounds for his role in The Smashing Machine. “It weighs on you,” he explained, reflecting on the challenges of maintaining that weight for subsequent projects, including live-action Moana. He described feeling “much better” after shedding the extra weight, drawing inspiration from iconic actor Clint Eastwood as a model for his character.
As the production of Lizard Music progresses, both Safdie and Johnson appear enthusiastic about the project’s potential. The film’s blend of adventure and heartfelt storytelling is expected to resonate with audiences of all ages, showcasing the duo’s commitment to creating engaging cinema.
Scheduled for release in March 2024, Lizard Music promises not only entertaining moments but also valuable lessons, making it a notable addition to both Safdie’s and Johnson’s filmographies.
