British Library Celebrates David Bowie with Special Concert

The British Library is set to commemorate the tenth anniversary of David Bowie’s death with a special concert titled David Bowie In Time: Just A Cabaret on January 17, 2024. This event will take place in the library’s Entrance Hall and promises an evening filled with music, discussions, and reflections on Bowie’s enduring legacy.

The concert features a diverse lineup of artists, including Blixa Bargeld, a prominent figure in the music scene as a founding member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and frontman of Einstürzende Neubauten. Bargeld will perform selections from his EP Blixa Sings David Bowie, a tribute to the iconic artist. Joining him on stage will be composer Nikko Weidermann, pianist Daniel Brandt, and Jehnny Beth, the former frontwoman of the band Savages, who will also contribute her own interpretations of Bowie’s songs.

Engaging Discussions and Insights

The evening will not only feature live performances but also in-depth discussions about Bowie’s music and influence. Tony Visconti, who produced several of Bowie’s acclaimed albums, including the renowned Berlin Trilogy—comprising Low, Heroes, and Lodger—will engage in conversation with Nicholas Pegg, the author of The Complete David Bowie. This dialogue will provide insights into Bowie’s artistic process and the evolution of his sound.

Additionally, Jehnny Beth will participate in a panel discussing Bowie’s final album, Blackstar. She will be joined by Donny McCaslin, the jazz saxophonist who led the band on Blackstar, and Jonathan Barnbrook, the album’s art designer. The discussion will be moderated by Mary Anne Hobbs from BBC Radio 6 Music, promising an engaging exploration of the themes and artistry behind Bowie’s last work.

A Lasting Legacy

David Bowie passed away on January 10, 2016, due to liver cancer, just two days after his 69th birthday. His influence on music, fashion, and culture remains profound, making this event a significant occasion for fans and musicians alike. The British Library’s celebration aims not only to honor Bowie’s memory but also to reflect on how his work continues to inspire new generations of artists.

As the event approaches, anticipation builds among fans and music lovers eager to pay tribute to one of the most innovative and beloved figures in contemporary music. With an impressive lineup of talent and rich discussions planned, David Bowie In Time: Just A Cabaret promises to be a memorable celebration of a true icon.
