Charli XCX Shifts Creative Focus from Music to Film

Charli XCX has revealed a significant shift in her creative inspiration, stating she finds herself more influenced by film than by new music. The British singer-songwriter, known for her hit “360,” transitioned into acting and filmmaking following the release of her acclaimed album Brat in 2024, as she felt a lack of motivation towards music.

In a conversation with fellow artist Yung Lean for Dazed, Charli expressed her current disconnection from the music scene. She noted, “After Brat, I felt really uninspired by music. I don’t really listen to that much music anyway. I listen to you, Lou Reed, Sophie, AG Cook, Benjamin [Bladee], George [Daniel, Charli’s husband and drummer with The 1975], and that’s kind of it.” This admission underscores her desire to explore different creative outlets rather than seeking new musical influences.

Embracing New Creative Ventures

Despite her temporary disinterest in music, Charli found renewed inspiration while working on the soundtrack for the upcoming film adaptation of Wuthering Heights. She stated, “After being so in the depths of my previous album, I was excited to escape into something entirely new, entirely opposite.” For Charli, Wuthering Heights evokes powerful imagery and emotions, including passion, pain, and the stark beauty of the English Moors.

The soundtrack features a collaboration with John Cale, a member of the iconic band The Velvet Underground. Charli has long admired Cale’s work, and their partnership on the song “House” marks an exciting venture for her.

During her conversation with Gwyneth Paltrow on the Goop podcast, Charli reflected on the success of her previous album, which garnered multiple Grammy and BRIT Awards. Despite its acclaim and popularity, she initially feared it might lead to her being dropped by her record label. “I actually made this record being like, ‘OK, I’m just going to do this one for me. Maybe I’m going to get dropped by my label, and that’s fine,’” she explained, highlighting her willingness to prioritize artistic integrity over commercial success.

A New Chapter in Creativity

Charli’s journey illustrates the complexities of an artist’s relationship with their craft. While Brat resonated with fans and sparked the viral Brat Summer trend, her exploration into other creative realms reflects a broader narrative among musicians seeking to redefine their artistry.

As she dives into the world of film, Charli XCX indicates that her future work may continue to blur the lines between music and visual storytelling. Her openness to new experiences promises to enrich her artistic output, allowing fans to witness the evolution of her creative voice in this new chapter.
