Community Choir Launches to Enhance Social Bonds Through Music

A new community initiative in Tamworth, Australia, aims to foster social cohesion through the joyful medium of song. On February 13, 2024, the Tamworth Regional Gallery hosted the inaugural gathering of the Gallery Community Choir, a free program developed in collaboration with the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music. The choir is led by Brookie Gillett, a well-known figure in the local music scene.

The event was marked by a vibrant atmosphere, reflecting the positive impact singing can have on individuals and communities. Emma Stilts, the gallery’s operations and visitor coordinator, highlighted the well-documented benefits of singing. “Singing can affect the neural pathways and releases endorphins, making people feel healthier, happier, smarter, and more creative,” she stated. This initiative is designed to be accessible to everyone, particularly benefiting those who might not afford such experiences.

Stilts emphasized the choir’s role in transforming the gallery into a welcoming community space, stating, “It really helps people who can’t always afford to do these sorts of things and accommodates the gallery as that third space where people can come and enjoy new experiences and try different things.” The program aims to build social networks and friendships among participants.

Following the first session, feedback from attendees prompted the addition of tea and biscuits for social engagement. “We are absolutely delighted with the response,” Stilts noted, reporting over 20 participants at the inaugural meeting. “It shows it’s hitting a nerve with our community. We are the country music capital; we should be singing more often.”

The choir is open to individuals of all skill levels. Participants are encouraged to request songs ahead of time, while some selections will be staples in their repertoire. “We’re here to have fun, so whatever people want to sing will be our lead,” Stilts explained.

Among the attendees were retired teachers Peter and Sue Langston. Sue discovered the choir through the gallery’s social media and was eager to join after learning that Gillett would lead it. “I do love to sing,” Peter expressed, revealing his enthusiasm for the initiative. He has a musical background, having sung in a choir at the conservatorium in Sydney during his youth.

Sue, who described herself as an “average singer,” found the first meeting to be “really uplifting.” Both emphasized the sense of community that accompanies participation in a group like this. They also noted that it serves as a “nice antidote to digital addiction,” highlighting the importance of in-person connections.

The Gallery Community Choir will meet every fortnight on Fridays from 13:00 to 14:00, with the next session scheduled for February 27, 2024. This initiative not only promotes musical expression but also strengthens the bonds within the community, creating a harmonious space for all to enjoy.
