Comedian Dave Hughes has declared that he has no intention of retiring from stand-up comedy, even after more than 30 years in the industry. At the age of 55, Hughes remains committed to performing, drawing parallels between his comedy career and older surfers who continue to hit the waves for the love of the sport.
Passion for Comedy and Family Inspiration
Hughes, who often performs at open-mic nights to test new material, emphasizes the importance of living in the moment. “I still love it,” he stated. “Stand-up comedy is my surfing basically.” He believes that age should not dictate one’s passions or hobbies, echoing the sentiments of older surfers who enjoy paddling out to catch waves.
As a father of three, Hughes frequently draws inspiration from his children’s lives for his routines. However, an incident in Noosa in late January 2026 tested his approach when a woman in the audience attempted to “censor” him during a performance. She shouted for him to stop making fun of his son, which Hughes found perplexing. “She stood up, yelled ‘Stop,’ then turned to face the audience and said that I must not ever make fun of my son on stage,” he recounted on social media.
Despite this challenge, Hughes revealed that his children generally accept being part of his act. “My daughters came and saw my last stand-up show … but they were annoyed that they didn’t get mentioned,” he said. “They were like, ‘Are we invisible to you, Dad?'”
Staying Active and Embracing Health
Hughes has also found unique ways to maintain his health and fitness. He has taken up table tennis, which he describes as a “great sport” that supports both physical and mental well-being. “I believe that they say that racket sports are the best thing for your brain,” he noted. Encouraging family participation, he said, “My wife, at the age of 46, just discovered table tennis, so I’m really encouraging her.”
In addition to table tennis, Hughes has long held a passion for Australian Rules Football (AFL). He played in an AFL legends match in August 2025, where he endured serious injuries, including five broken ribs and a punctured lung, yet continued to play. “I wanted to kick a goal,” he said, reflecting on the thrill of performing in front of a crowd of 30,000 people. “The attention has made it all worthwhile.”
Life Philosophy and Future Aspirations
Beyond his comedic persona, Hughes adopts a spiritual outlook on life. “I sincerely believe I’ve given up my ego,” he said, emphasizing the importance of appreciating the miracle of being alive. He envisions spending his later years traveling the world with his wife, Holly Hughes, whom he married in 2006, while continuing to perform comedy. “I’ll never retire … I’ll always be trying to do stand-up comedy somewhere and Holly can be my full-time stage manager,” he joked.
Financially savvy, Hughes has made choices that have allowed him to maintain stability throughout his career. He credits his decision to stop drinking at the age of 21 and to avoid drugs, such as cocaine, for both his financial health and well-being. “I’ve not been down to my last dollar since probably 1995,” he said, highlighting his prudent approach to spending.
With a commitment to his craft, family, and health, Dave Hughes continues to inspire others with his determination to pursue what he loves, regardless of age. “Live your dream,” he encouraged, reinforcing his belief that passion knows no boundaries.
