Photographer Josh Ball from Dunsborough is turning his passion for portrait photography into a global phenomenon. After a successful series of portraits captured during his travels in Slovenia, he plans to bring this creative venture back to Western Australia.
The project, which began in July 2023, involves Ball approaching individuals who capture his attention and asking to take their portraits. He films these interactions, and with the subjects’ consent, shares the videos and photographs on his social media platforms. This unique approach has resonated with audiences, as evidenced by one of his most popular posts featuring Francka, a 95-year-old farmer. Her portrait alongside her “Ferrari” tractor garnered an impressive 3.5 million views after being featured in the Slovenian newspaper Večer.
Another portrait capturing the spirit of the elderly electrician Jože, who posed with his chainsaw, also attracted significant attention, amassing over 464,000 views on social media. Within just two weeks and nine posts, Ball’s Instagram follower count surged from 10,700 to more than 25,000, illustrating the growing interest in his work.
Ball describes the project as a way to connect with locals while traveling: “This started as a way for me to connect with locals while I was travelling, and it pushed me out of my comfort zone. Through my camera, strangers became friends, and their stories reached millions, proving that in a world of technology and noise, human connection is what we all crave.”
As he returns to Australia, Ball intends to continue his portrait series, recently capturing moments from Kalgoorlie and Chittering. His initial test of the format in Australia featured a young truck driver named Chevy at a service station, which quickly gained over 320,000 views within 36 hours.
The success of Ball’s project highlights a growing trend in photography and social media, where personal stories resonate deeply with audiences. His work not only showcases individual personalities but also emphasizes the importance of connection in today’s fast-paced world. Those interested in viewing Ball’s portraits can follow his journey through his Instagram page, where he continues to share the stories of those he meets.
