Golden Bachelor Unveils New Format with Mature Contestants

The reality television series, Golden Bachelor, has introduced a significant change to its format, marking a new era for the show. Broadcast on Channel 9, the latest season debuted with impressive ratings, attracting a national audience of 749,000 viewers during its premiere. This revamped version features a mature-aged cast, bringing a fresh dynamic to the well-known franchise.

One notable development in this season is the strategy implemented by the female contestants, which they have termed “permission to push.” During the most recent episode, women who did not participate in a group date were prioritized for one-on-one conversations with Barry ‘Bear’ Myrden at the cocktail party. This innovative approach highlights a sense of camaraderie among participants, focusing on mutual support rather than rivalry.

Lauren, a 60-year-old dressage team manager, shared her insights in a piece-to-camera interview, emphasizing that the concept is rooted in “women supporting women.” She noted the profound difference the mature participants bring to the show. A montage aired during the episode showcased the women encouraging one another to speak with Bear, often stepping back to allow their co-stars the opportunity to shine.

At a recent launch event for Channel 9, Lauren elaborated on the strong sisterhood formed during filming. “I loved living with the girls, so much so that they come and visit and stay with me all the time now,” she said. “We are seriously a family, so it’s a beautiful love story between the girls.”

Another contestant, Catherine, a 56-year-old interior designer, chose not to adhere to the “permission to push” strategy. Despite sharing a kiss with Bear during the group date, she took the initiative to speak with him during the cocktail party, a move that some of her co-stars found frustrating. Catherine, who turned to competitive bodybuilding following her divorce, described the atmosphere on set as one of “respectful competitiveness.”

“It’s like, ‘I want this to happen, I want to make it happen,’ and the other girls were like, ‘Okay, if that’s what you want, we support you one hundred percent,’” Catherine explained. She highlighted the importance of bonding through shared stories, which fostered a supportive environment that transcended competition.

The Golden Bachelor airs on Mondays and Tuesdays at 19:30 on Channel 9 and is also available on 9Now. As the series progresses, viewers can expect to see more of the unique relationships and dynamics that emerge among the contestants, illustrating a refreshing take on reality television.
