Horseback Ride Returns to Spread Christmas Cheer and Aid Families

The Upper Lachlan community is gearing up for a festive initiative as the Christmas Cheer Ride returns on December 20, 2023. Originally conceived as a light-hearted outing, the event now has a charitable purpose, aiming to support local families in need during the holiday season.

Last year, Alex Meggitt and three friends rode through the streets of Crookwell on horseback, donning comedic Christmas costumes and spreading cheer. The ride became an unexpected success, prompting the group to transform it into an annual event with a mission. This year, the Christmas Cheer Ride seeks to raise $5,000 for families facing difficulties during the festive period.

All proceeds from the ride will benefit Vinnies Crookwell, which will provide gift cards for essentials and presents to around 100 to 150 families who struggle during this time. “We want to help brighten up their Christmas this year,” Meggitt said. To bolster fundraising efforts, she has contributed her wedding dress and bridesmaid dress for auction, with all funds directed towards the goal.

The ride is set to be a larger affair this year. Goulburn Street will be closed to accommodate approximately 20 riders, including local business owners and police officers. Participants are once again encouraged to wear festive costumes as they embark on a route starting from the Crookwell Showground at 15:00. The riders will navigate through key areas of town, including the local retirement home, and are expected to arrive at the Top Pub around 18:00.

The event promises to be a lively gathering, featuring live music, a barbecue, and kid-friendly activities, including a horse-drawn sulky and a visit from Santa Claus. Additionally, local businesses, such as Crookwell IGA, will contribute free lollies for attendees.

Meggitt expressed enthusiasm for this year’s event, noting that community interest has been palpable. “People are really looking forward to it,” she remarked. Despite parting with her wedding dress, she remains optimistic about the impact of the fundraiser. “It was just sitting there, not doing anything,” she stated. “I’m not getting married again.”

As the Christmas Cheer Ride approaches, locals and visitors alike are encouraged to participate by donating or cheering on the riders. This initiative not only aims to spread festive joy but also highlights the spirit of community support in Upper Lachlan during the holiday season. More information about the event can be found on community platforms.
