Moments of everyday life often tell stories more powerfully than staged photographs. Illawarra Mercury photographer Adam McLean has built a career capturing these fleeting instances, showcasing the beauty of daily life in the Illawarra region of Australia. His collection, aptly titled ‘Daily Life’, offers a candid glimpse into the landscapes, streetscapes, and communities that shape this vibrant area.
McLean, who has taken thousands of photographs throughout his career, prefers a documentary-style approach. “For me, I’m more interested in the ‘fly on the wall’ photography,” he explained. “Whenever I get a chance, I just want to be a casual observer rather than an active participant.” This philosophy allows him to capture genuine moments, revealing the essence of life as it unfolds.
Documenting the Unseen
The inspiration behind McLean’s work can be traced back to his early days as a photographer. He recalls being captivated by the iconic Max Dupain photograph of a sunbaker at Culburra Beach, taken in 1937. “I looked at that and I just loved the tone and the highlights,” he said. This fascination drove him to study the work of renowned street photographers, emphasizing that photojournalism involves observing rather than orchestrating events.
“With photojournalism, you’re really not taking part in what’s happening; you’re just on the sidelines,” McLean noted. He strives to avoid contriving scenes, aiming instead for a true representation of reality. By positioning himself at the right moment, he captures fleeting instances where light and life converge.
His commitment to documenting everyday life took on new meaning during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I did a lot of this during COVID, when I would just walk the streets,” he said. The unusual circumstances of the pandemic provided a rich backdrop for his photography. One memorable image features a man wearing a Darth Vader mask while promoting sanitation and mask-wearing at various businesses. This photo exemplifies the unique moments that arise from unexpected situations.
Exhibition Celebrating Local Talent
McLean’s work will be showcased in a special exhibition at the Wollongong City Library, set to open in December 2023. This event marks a significant milestone for the Illawarra Mercury, celebrating its 170th anniversary. The exhibition will highlight McLean’s ability to freeze time and present the beauty of ordinary life through his lens.
“The beauty of photography lies in its ability to capture moments that are often fleeting,” McLean remarked. “You take photos in a fraction of a second, and these moments are usually gone before you know it.” His dedication to this craft not only offers a window into the Illawarra region but also serves as a reminder of the stories embedded in everyday experiences.
As the exhibition approaches, McLean’s work invites viewers to reflect on the significance of the ordinary, encouraging an appreciation for the moments that often go unnoticed.
