Jim Carrey is reportedly in negotiations to take the lead role in a live action adaptation of The Jetsons, a beloved animated series that first premiered in 1962. Sources, including Variety, indicate that this project is being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures with Colin Trevorrow, known for directing Jurassic World Dominion, set to helm the film. As discussions about the screenplay progress, co-writer Joe Epstein is also onboard, although specific details about the storyline remain undisclosed.
The original animated series centered on a futuristic family living in outer space, showcasing the lives of George Jetson, his wife Jane, their children Judy and Elroy, and their dog Astro, alongside the household robot Rosie. Over the years, the franchise has seen various adaptations, including the animated feature film Jetsons: The Movie released in 1990 and crossovers with other popular franchises like The Flintstones in 1987 and WWE in 2017.
Carrey’s recent filmography has been limited primarily to his role as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, spanning from 2020 to 2024. In 2022, he hinted at possibly retiring from acting, stating to Access Hollywood: “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”
Despite his retirement comments, Carrey has acknowledged that he remains open to compelling offers, suggesting that a “good idea” or a desirable team could change his plans. “You can’t be definite about these things,” he remarked to Comicbook.com. He expressed willingness to reprise iconic roles, such as Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask, provided the concept is right.
He also reflected on the possibility of returning as The Grinch, noting advancements in CGI that could alleviate the extensive makeup process he endured for the original film. “If we can figure out The Grinch… it was an extremely excruciating process,” he explained. “Now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things.”
As the project develops, fans of both Carrey and The Jetsons will be eager to see how this classic franchise translates to a live action format under the direction of Trevorrow. With Carrey’s unique comedic style, the film promises to offer a fresh take on this iconic series, appealing to both new audiences and longtime fans.
