Jimmy Kimmel’s Return Monologue Surges to Nearly 19 Million Views

The return of Jimmy Kimmel to late-night television has garnered significant attention, with his recent monologue accumulating nearly 19 million views across social media platforms. As of Wednesday afternoon (Thursday AEST), Kimmel’s monologue achieved 13.3 million views on YouTube and 5.6 million on Instagram. The broadcast ratings for Tuesday’s show are still pending, as several major ABC affiliates opted not to carry the episode.

Corporate Pressure and Political Satire

Kimmel’s return came shortly after his suspension was lifted by network parent Walt Disney. This decision followed a wave of backlash stemming from Kimmel’s comments regarding the accused killer of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. His remarks had drawn outrage on social media and pressure from the administration of former President Donald Trump.

The choice to reinstate Kimmel is seen as a notable act of corporate defiance during a time of increasing scrutiny on media figures by political leaders. Disney faced pressure from Kimmel’s fan base, which included some individuals canceling subscriptions to the company’s streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu. During his monologue, Kimmel humorously referenced this situation, stating, “To reactivate your Disney+ and Hulu account, open the Disney+ app on your smart TV or TV-connected device.”

In his monologue, Kimmel defended the role of political satire against what he described as “bullying” from Trump and his administration. With evident emotion, he expressed, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.” He further criticized Trump’s supporters, suggesting they were attempting to exploit Kirk’s tragic death for political gain.

Trump’s Response and Broadcast Challenges

Before the broadcast, Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, expressing disbelief that ABC reinstated Kimmel. He referred to the comedian as “yet another arm” of the Democratic National Committee and described Kimmel’s jokes about his administration as “a major illegal Campaign Contribution.” Previously, Trump had claimed that Kimmel was let go due to “bad ratings.”

The late-night television format has faced challenges in recent years, as viewership declines have pushed audiences towards streaming platforms. Younger demographics, in particular, are gravitating towards viewing content on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, which has resulted in shrinking audiences and reduced advertising revenues for traditional television networks.

On the day of Kimmel’s return, both Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair opted to keep “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off their combined 70 ABC-affiliated stations, which represent approximately 23 percent of US households. Consequently, the show was unavailable over the air in several major cities, including Seattle, Salt Lake City, Nashville, and New Orleans, as well as in Washington, D.C. Nexstar has stated that it continues to evaluate the status of the show, which it plans to preempt on its local ABC television stations.

Kimmel’s return to television not only marks a pivotal moment for his career but also highlights the ongoing intersection of media, politics, and audience engagement in an evolving entertainment landscape.
