Josie Baff’s pursuit of a second Olympic medal was cut short after a crash involving her teammate Adam Lambert during the mixed team final in snowboard cross at the Winter Olympics. The incident occurred on March 10, 2024, as Baff and Lambert aimed to bolster Australia’s medal tally following Matt Graham’s bronze in the dual moguls event earlier that day.
Baff, who had previously secured gold in the women’s individual event, found herself in a difficult position after Lambert collided with Italian racer Lorenzo Sommariva. The crash left Lambert trailing by 4.16 seconds behind the race leader, Loan Bozzolo from France. In the mixed team format, the women race based on the time their male counterpart finishes, which meant Baff had no chance to improve her position after Lambert’s fall.
The gold medal in the event went to the British duo of Huw Nightingale and Charlotte Bankes, with Italy claiming silver and France taking bronze. Despite the disappointment, Baff expressed pride in their performance, stating, “I think we showed everyone what we’re capable of. I truly believe that we could have had that medal, and I guess that stings a little bit.”
The challenges of snowboard cross are well known, and Baff acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the sport. “It’s border cross, and it shows the unpredictability of the sport, and that’s just racing,” she added. Her teammate Lambert, reflecting on his crash, explained, “I landed on the tail of Sommariva and then got caught up inside, losing contact with my toe-side edge. That’s what sent me down.”
Lambert, who entered the Games ranked No. 1 in the World Cup standings, emphasized the pride he felt in reaching the final, despite the outcome. “I know Josie could have pulled back half a second; she’s been riding so well. But four seconds is just slightly too much,” he said. He also took the opportunity to shift his focus, saying, “I have lots of other goals when it comes to my sport… winning a Crystal Globe is high on that list.”
As Baff and Lambert reflect on their Olympic journey, the duo’s experience serves as a reminder of the highs and lows athletes face at such prestigious events. With Baff striving to become the first Australian athlete to win two medals in the same Winter Games, this setback is sure to fuel her determination for future competitions.
