Kate Winslet Looks Forward to Directing Again After “Goodbye June”

Kate Winslet is enthusiastic about returning to the director’s chair following her debut with the festive drama Goodbye June. The acclaimed actress not only stars in the film but also takes on directing duties for the first time. In a recent interview on IndieWire’s Screen Talk podcast, Winslet expressed her deep affection for the entire filmmaking process, stating, “I honestly didn’t want it to finish. I loved everything. I just hope I do get to do it again.”

Set to hit cinemas later this month, Goodbye June will stream on Netflix starting on December 24, 2025. The film tells the poignant story of four siblings navigating the emotional turmoil as their mother’s health deteriorates during the holiday season. Winslet emphasized the significance of the Christmas setting for a narrative centered on loss.

Exploring Themes of Family and Loss

“Christmas is such a heightened, emotional time for anybody,” Winslet remarked. She reflected on how the holiday can amplify feelings of togetherness and grief, noting, “It is a time when there’s a pressure-cooker of emotion.” The film’s core revolves around family dynamics as they grapple with impending loss, which Winslet sees as a crucial theme.

Winslet further articulated the importance of discussing difficult topics such as death and grief, stating, “Life is so short and so precious, and we don’t talk about loss… We’re not typically very good at it at all.” She hopes Goodbye June will encourage audiences to engage in those challenging conversations.

The screenplay for Goodbye June was crafted by Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, who is the product of her marriage to director Sam Mendes. She described the script as “incredibly funny, touching, and moving,” reflecting the emotional depth that resonated with her.

A Personal Journey of Directing

Winslet’s decision to direct stemmed from her personal connection to the material. After reading Anders’ script, she felt compelled to take charge of the project. “I felt so close to the material… I knew that I couldn’t step into that role unless I felt emotionally brave enough,” she explained.

Taking on the director’s role at the age of 50, she expressed pride in her achievement. “Having spent so many years advocating for women getting into male-dominated spaces in this industry, I thought, ‘If I don’t do this now, maybe I never will,'” Winslet said.

The film features a talented cast, including Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, and Dame Helen Mirren, further enhancing its appeal. Winslet’s vision for the film reflects her commitment to both storytelling and breaking barriers in the film industry.

As Winslet looks ahead, her experience directing Goodbye June seems to have ignited a passion for future projects. The film not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also serves as a heartfelt reminder of the importance of family, love, and the conversations that matter most.
