A new BioShock movie is officially in development at Netflix, with plans to release it in conjunction with an upcoming version of the popular video game series. Producer Roy Lee revealed in a recent interview that both Netflix and rights-holder Take-Two Interactive are eager for the film’s debut, intending to align it with “some of the potential new incarnations of the game.”
While Lee did not specify which game titles would be associated with the film, it is known that BioShock 4 is still in development. Following years of speculation, Take-Two confirmed that the game is not dead and will be released “without question.” This announcement came after the game underwent a partial overhaul aimed at enhancing critical aspects of its design.
Production Timeline and Challenges
Lee indicated that the BioShock movie project was initially slated to begin a few years ago, but director Francis Lawrence was occupied with other projects, including The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, set to release in December 2023. Lawrence is expected to remain in post-production until at least September 2024, which means production for the BioShock film may not commence until 2027. Lee stated, “It’s steadily on the path, but you know how it goes. It’s … so many things could get in the way, but I know that the intent is to hopefully get in production next year.”
The BioShock movie has faced numerous delays over the past decade. Initially, Gore Verbinski, known for directing the Pirates of the Caribbean series, was attached to helm the project, envisioning a big-budget, R-rated version. However, studio executives hesitated after the underperformance of Watchmen, leading to a shift in creative direction.
Script Development and Future Prospects
In 2024, the film’s trajectory changed significantly when Netflix opted for a more “personal” approach amid a regime shift that emphasized quality over quantity and more manageable budgets. The screenplay is being crafted by Michael Green, known for Blade Runner 2049, and Justin Rhodes, who previously worked on Terminator: Dark Fate. As of now, there is no cast attached to the project, which is expected given the absence of a confirmed production start date.
In addition to the movie, the future of the BioShock gaming franchise remains a point of interest. After significant changes at its development studio, Cloud Chamber, including the departure of studio head Kelley Gilmore, the company is now under the leadership of former Diablo executive Rod Fergusson. Fergusson was previously brought in to assist in the completion of BioShock Infinite, and his expertise could play a pivotal role in the revival and successful launch of BioShock 4.
As the BioShock franchise continues to evolve, both fans of the games and potential viewers of the movie are closely watching for updates on these exciting developments.
