Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos has emphasized that there is no rush for forward Bobby Hill to return to the team until he is fully prepared. Hill, who was awarded the 2023 Norm Smith Medal, is currently on extended leave for the second time within a year due to personal challenges that have impacted his training.
Last season, the 25-year-old participated in only 14 games, as personal circumstances affected his ability to train consistently. After a brief return to the squad leading up to the finals, Hill was not selected for the preliminary final against the Brisbane Lions, where Collingwood was eliminated.
On January 9, 2024, Collingwood confirmed through an official statement that Hill would remain away from the club until after the Christmas break. He was absent from a recent team event at the Australian Open, where the squad gathered in the Emirates marquee.
Focus on Well-being and Team Support
In a recent interview, Daicos highlighted the importance of prioritizing Hill’s health and well-being. “With Bob, it’s just ensuring that his health and wellbeing is the main priority constantly,” he stated. “We’ve been checking in with him, and I think he’s going well.”
Daicos expressed optimism regarding Hill’s eventual return, stating, “Whenever the time’s ready for him and he’s ready to join back in training is a win.” He conveyed the team’s eagerness to see Hill back on the field, saying, “We all love seeing him out there doing what he does, and he gives us all so much energy.”
Daicos reassured fans that there is no pressure on Hill to rush back, stating, “We just want him, his health, and well-being to be the main priority.” The team has maintained an open line of communication with Hill, ensuring he feels comfortable reaching out to his teammates. “A lot of us have checked in making sure he’s going well, and it seems to be that he is feeling really good.”
Even if Hill returns to training soon, it is likely he will miss the early part of the season. Nevertheless, Daicos is confident that the team can manage without him and also adapt to the departure of fellow forward Brody Mihocek to Melbourne.
Addressing Team Dynamics and Fitness Concerns
In addition to discussing Hill, Daicos addressed ongoing scrutiny surrounding Collingwood’s age profile. The team enters the new season with the oldest roster in the league, having extended contracts for seasoned players like Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, and Jeremy Howe. Daicos dismissed concerns about the team’s age, noting, “We’ll start the season really strong, so I’m looking forward to that.”
The 23-year-old also spoke about his own fitness, having recently excelled during a match simulation session. Although he had briefly left the field last week due to a leg concern, he returned to participate fully. “Feeling really fresh, body feels awesome heading into the practice matches,” Daicos remarked. He praised the club for effectively managing player health and noted the positive outcomes of their management strategies.
As the team gears up for the upcoming season, the focus remains on health and readiness, both for Hill and the squad. For those in need of support, crisis resources are available, including Lifeline at 13 11 14 and beyondblue at 1300 22 4636.
