Nicole Scherzinger Envisions Modern Pussycat Dolls Inspired by Lizzo and Eilish

Nicole Scherzinger, former lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, has shared her vision of what a contemporary version of the iconic girl group might look like. In an insightful interview with Billboard, Scherzinger suggested that if the Pussycat Dolls were formed today, they would embody the styles and attitudes of modern artists like Lizzo, Demi Lovato, and Billie Eilish.

Reflecting on the evolution of beauty standards, Scherzinger emphasized that the definition of “sexy” has shifted dramatically over the years. She remarked, “When I was thinking of the Pussycat Dolls — and I’m so proud of the Pussycat Dolls — I’m thinking about, ‘What would the Pussycat Dolls look like today?’ The Pussycat Dolls would look like Lizzo; like Demi Lovato; like Billie Eilish. It’s unconventional. It’s not what you would think.”

Scherzinger pointed out that what was once considered sexy was often about appealing to others, but today it centers around self-acceptance and empowerment. She stated, “Ten years ago, 20 years ago, being sexy was about being sexy for someone else. Now being sexy is about feeling sexy in your own skin, feeling strong about owning, embracing and loving and accepting yourself. It’s called evolution.”

The singer, also a mentor and judge on the new talent show Building the Band, is eager to guide contestants in discovering their strengths. Scherzinger expressed her commitment to fostering a supportive environment, saying, “I want to see the best in people. How can I bring out the best in you, as a human and as an artist? Find the strengths and focus on the strengths. How can we encourage, how can we empower?”

Building the Band is an innovative “social experiment” that brings together young singers from around the world. Participants form groups based solely on musical compatibility and personal chemistry, meeting in person only for their debut performance. Scherzinger is enthusiastic about this unique approach, highlighting its authenticity: “I love doing things that break all the rules. It doesn’t get any more real than having a band put themselves together without any record execs or labels telling them what they have to do, what they have to look like. That doesn’t work anymore. That’s the old formula.”

As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, Scherzinger’s insights reflect a broader cultural shift towards inclusivity and self-expression. Her vision for a modern Pussycat Dolls aligns with the growing acceptance of diverse representations of beauty and talent in the music industry.
