David Ogden Stiers, renowned for his role in the television classic M*A*S*H, passed away at the age of 75 on March 3, 2018. Stiers joined the series during its sixth season in 1977, stepping into the shoes of Major Charles Winchester III, a character that became iconic over the show’s run until its conclusion in 1983. His performance was notable for adding depth and sophistication to the ensemble cast, filling the void left by Larry Linville’s Frank Burns.
Beyond his acclaimed television work, Stiers was a talented voice actor, contributing his distinctive voice to several beloved Disney films. His roles included memorable characters in Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Lilo and Stitch, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Stiers’ versatility allowed him to feature in numerous popular television series, including Charlie’s Angels, Murder, She Wrote, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Frasier, and the pivotal miniseries North and South.
In the 1980s, Stiers appeared in a series of Perry Mason television movies, portraying District Attorney Michael Reston, a character often bested by Raymond Burr’s Mason. His collaborations with Woody Allen in films like Mighty Aphrodite and Everybody Says I Love You further showcased his remarkable range as an actor.
In a significant revelation in 2009, Stiers publicly came out as gay, sharing that he had kept his sexuality private throughout much of his career due to concerns it might limit his opportunities in family-friendly roles. His openness has been seen as a source of inspiration for many within the LGBTQ+ community.
Xavier Bettel: A Trailblazer in Politics
On the same day that Stiers is remembered, another significant figure in the LGBTQ+ community, Xavier Bettel, celebrates his birthday. Bettel, who served as the Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 2013 to 2023, made history as the first openly gay head of government in Luxembourg and the European Union.
Bettel’s election marked a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ representation in politics. By achieving such a high office, he represented a broader message of inclusivity and progressiveness, demonstrating that sexual orientation should not hinder professional success. His tenure was characterized by a commitment to sustainability, social justice, and economic development, earning him respect as an effective leader.
Before entering politics, Bettel was a successful lawyer, having studied law at the University of Nancy in France. He became involved in politics in 1989 with the Democratic Party of Luxembourg (DP) and quickly rose through the ranks. His experience included serving on the Luxembourg City Council and later the Chamber of Deputies, where he held various leadership roles.
Following the 2023 elections, Bettel transitioned to the role of Deputy Prime Minister, continuing his commitment to public service. His journey exemplifies the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights and representation in high-level government positions.
Both David Ogden Stiers and Xavier Bettel have left indelible marks on their respective fields, embodying the spirit of resilience and change in the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.
