The Shire of Harvey has inaugurated a new dog exercise area at Meriden Park, providing a dedicated space for dogs to play and socialize off-lead. This fully enclosed facility, located in the southern section of the park, features a drinking fountain, a dog bowl, and an accessible path, ensuring a safe environment for both pets and their owners.
The establishment of this dog park was initially supported by the council in November 2024 and received formal endorsement in January 2025. This decision followed a community consultation process regarding the Meriden Park master plan, which outlined various enhancements to the area, including the dog park. The completion of this facility marks the second major project within the master plan, following the recent opening of a skatepark in April 2024.
Future Developments and Community Impact
Plans for Meriden Park include further enhancements, such as a fully accessible playground, improved parking facilities, and a new toilet block, all scheduled for completion this year. The new playground is set to feature a zipline, trampolines, and a variety of other play equipment, catering to the recreational needs of families and children in the community.
The dog park adds to a network of over ten designated dog exercise areas within the Shire of Harvey, reinforcing the council’s commitment to providing safe spaces for pets. While dogs are encouraged to enjoy their time off-lead in these approved areas, regulations remain in place requiring dogs to be on a leash in public spaces outside of these designated zones.
Residents have welcomed the opening of the dog park, viewing it as a positive addition to community facilities. The initiative not only promotes responsible pet ownership but also facilitates social interaction among dog owners, fostering a sense of community. The Shire of Harvey continues to prioritize the quality of life for its residents and their furry companions through ongoing investments in public spaces.
