The Australian Football League (AFL) has confirmed that American rapper Snoop Dogg will headline the entertainment for the upcoming grand final, despite facing backlash over his selection. AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon expressed his confidence in Snoop Dogg’s ability to deliver a memorable performance during the event scheduled for September 30, 2023.
Dillon addressed the criticism surrounding the choice, stating, “What I’m looking forward to over the next four weeks is the most important nine games of the year.” He emphasized the importance of the grand final, which will feature the two best teams in the league, and asserted, “The grand final entertainment will add to what will be an amazing spectacle … it will be at a level that we haven’t seen for a long time, he’ll do a great job.”
As the AFL finals series approaches, the pre-finals bye has also been a topic of discussion. Some have suggested moving it to the weekend before the grand final, but Dillon believes its current placement is beneficial. “It’s really served the game well. It allows the teams who are in the eight to really set themselves,” he noted. “I’m comfortable with where it is at the moment.”
The concept of a pre-finals wildcard round has been floated, which Dillon acknowledged could enhance the season. “It would have added a lot to the season, but we just need to hasten slowly. I’m not ruling it in or out,” he remarked.
The AFL finals series kicks off on Thursday night at Adelaide Oval, where the Crows will face Collingwood. The match carries additional emotional weight, particularly as Izak Rankine has been suspended for four games following a homophobic slur directed at a Magpies opponent. When questioned about potential crowd security measures for the game, Dillon refrained from elaborating, stating, “There will be a lot of passion in the crowd, but we have the best fans in the world.”
Awards will also be presented during the grand final. Luke Hodge, a celebrated player from Hawthorn, will present the Norm Smith Medal for the best player on the field. Meanwhile, Adam Simpson, who led West Coast to victory in 2018, will award the Jock McHale Medal to the winning coach. The Ron Barassi Medal for the captain of the victorious team will be presented by Ken Fraser, and retired Richmond star Jack Riewoldt will serve as the premiership cup ambassador.
As the grand final approaches, the AFL remains focused on delivering a thrilling conclusion to the season, with Dillon reaffirming his commitment to enhancing the overall experience for fans and players alike.
