The Hives Rock Melbourne with High-Energy Return After Years

The Swedish rock band The Hives electrified audiences with their return to Melbourne on July 19, 2025, marking their first Australian performance since 2015. The concert, held at the iconic Forum Melbourne, was a celebration of their high-octane music and dynamic stage presence, reaffirming their reputation as one of the best live bands worldwide.

This show was part of a much-anticipated tour that follows a significant hiatus. The Hives have long been heralded as key players in the garage rock revival that surged in the early 2000s. Frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, known for his flamboyant and charismatic style, led the charge as the band performed a mix of classic hits and newer tracks, captivating a diverse audience that ranged from long-time fans to younger rock enthusiasts.

Electric Atmosphere and Crowd Engagement

The atmosphere inside the venue was electric as anticipation built before the band took the stage. Large lanterns spelling out The Hives adorned the backdrop, enhancing the vibrant visual spectacle. As the band emerged, dressed in striking black and white suits, the crowd erupted in cheers. Almqvist quickly set the tone with his bombastic energy, swinging the microphone cable and engaging the audience with his trademark exuberance.

His playful taunting, asking whether anyone had attended a rock concert before, served to further ignite the crowd’s enthusiasm. “Then f–king act like it!” he shouted, prompting a frenzy of jumping and dancing that defined the night’s spirit. The crowd’s excitement peaked during performances of hits like “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Walk Idiot Walk,” which elicited the loudest reactions.

Despite the enthusiastic responses to their classic tracks, the newer songs received a more subdued reaction. Nevertheless, Almqvist’s ability to interact with the audience transformed each moment into a memorable experience. He orchestrated a playful call-and-response segment, where he taught the crowd to echo a bass line, amplifying the collective energy in the room.

A Legendary Return

As the concert progressed, Almqvist maintained the momentum, culminating in a traditional finale where he divided the audience for the closing track, “Tick Tick Boom.” This segment showcased the band’s chaotic energy as he encouraged everyone to crouch down before launching into a collective jump. The session was a testament to their enduring ability to connect with fans and create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Reflecting on the significance of this return, it is clear that The Hives have not only maintained their status as rock icons but have also evolved their performance artistry over the years. With their recent album titled “The Hives Forever Forever The Hives,” they continue to solidify their legacy in the music industry.

As the night drew to a close, it was evident that The Hives had delivered an exhilarating experience that would resonate with fans long after the final notes faded. Their return to Melbourne was a celebration of rock music’s power to unite generations, and a reminder of why they are celebrated as one of the premier live acts in the world.
