Tyriq Withers Calls Debut Film Him a ‘Cathartic Experience’

In his debut film, Him, actor Tyriq Withers describes the experience as a “cathartic journey.” The 27-year-old portrays Cameron Cade, a promising young quarterback whose life is turned upside down following a violent incident on the field. The psychological thriller explores themes of loss and transformation that deeply resonate with Withers, who sees parallels between the film’s narrative and his own life experiences.

Exploring Themes of Grief and Identity

Withers explained that the film delves into the complexities of grief, stating, “Grief isn’t just about losing a person; it can be about losing your former self.” He reflected on a significant period in his life where he grappled with the loss of his identity tied to sports. “For much of my childhood, my self-worth was linked to athletics: Did I make the team? Am I scoring goals?”

Directed by Justin Tipping, known for his work on The Chi and Dear White People, Him follows Cade’s tumultuous journey as he navigates both personal trauma and professional ambition. The film is produced by acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele, recognized for his contributions to modern horror with films like Get Out and Us. Joining Withers in the cast is actress Julia Fox, who plays a character reminiscent of a Lady Gaga-like influencer.

A Journey from Sports to Acting

Withers’ transition from sports to acting is a central theme of his personal narrative. A former varsity soccer player, he initially joined the American football team at Florida State University as a wide receiver. It was through the university’s Black Student Union that he discovered his passion for theatre. “I felt a part of my soul yearning for a more human experience,” he said, highlighting the emotional depth he sought in acting.

To prepare for his role as Cade, Withers underwent rigorous training, including two-hour gym sessions and a strict diet consisting of five chicken meals daily. “In the beginning, me throwing a football looks nothing like what you see in the film,” he remarked, emphasizing the physical demands of portraying a professional athlete. Yet, the preparation also stirred painful emotions linked to his past.

Withers lost his older brother, Kionte Withers, in a car accident in 2021, which makes returning to Florida a bittersweet experience. “I do miss Florida, but it’s harder to go back because I lost my brother there,” he shared. Certain childhood cartoons evoke strong feelings of nostalgia for him, which he described as both joyful and painful.

Reflecting on the film’s impact, Withers described a “pinch-me” moment when he met Tyler, The Creator backstage at a concert, illustrating the surreal nature of his rising fame. He also praised Julia Fox’s performance in Him, humorously stating, “I want to be Julia Fox when I grow up,” capturing the admiration he holds for his co-star.

Through Him, Tyriq Withers not only confronts his own grief but also invites audiences to reflect on their personal journeys of loss and transformation. The film is set to resonate with viewers, offering a compelling narrative that intertwines ambition, trauma, and the search for identity.
