UTAS Stadium Prepares for Historic Foo Fighters Concert in Launceston

Launceston’s UTAS Stadium is set to host a monumental event as the Foo Fighters prepare for their only Australian concert on Saturday, January 24, 2024. The venue, formerly known as York Park, has a rich history of sporting and entertainment events, but this performance is expected to be particularly significant, drawing 24,000 fans who sold out tickets in just 20 minutes.

The stadium, located on Invermay Road, has been a prominent site for various sports since 2001. During this time, it has hosted a total of 96 AFL games, along with matches from women’s cricket, A-League football, and AFLW competitions. Iconic moments are part of its legacy, including Buddy Franklin’s remarkable 13-goal game and the infamous Sirengate controversy between St Kilda and Fremantle during AFL matches in 2021.

In addition to sports, the venue has welcomed significant international events, including the Rugby Union World Cup in 2003, featuring a match between Namibia and Romania. The upcoming Foo Fighters concert marks a rare occurrence for live music at the stadium, with the last notable performance by the Irish band The Corrs occurring in 2023.

Historic Performances at UTAS Stadium

UTAS Stadium has a storied history of hosting legendary artists. In 1976, Ike and Tina Turner performed, drawing a crowd of 4,500 on Australia Day, making Launceston the only non-capital city on their tour. More recently, Sir Elton John graced the stage as part of his Rocket Man: Greatest Hits Live tour, attracting 15,000 attendees in 2007. Promoter Michael Chugg praised the venue, stating, “It’s great that Tasmania has such a professional entertainment and sporting facility like this for people like ourselves and Sir Elton.”

The venue’s record attendance for a sporting event is 20,971, achieved during an AFL match between Hawthorn and Richmond in 2006. The highest non-sporting attendance was 17,000, set during a religious revival meeting hosted by Billy Graham in 1959. Hawthorn has celebrated multiple AFL premiership victories at the stadium, drawing thousands of fans in 2008, 2013, and 2014.

Diverse Uses and Future Prospects

Beyond its role in sports and music, UTAS Stadium has been utilized for motocross events, featuring acts like Nitro Circus and Crusty Demons. As Launceston gears up for the Foo Fighters concert, the venue is poised to further its reputation as a versatile location for major events.

The anticipation surrounding the Foo Fighters’ performance highlights the stadium’s evolution and its significance to the Launceston community. As fans prepare to gather for this historic event, the excitement is palpable, promising a night of unforgettable music and memories.
