Zack Snyder is gearing up for the production of his long-anticipated film, The Last Photograph, with filming set to commence this month. The acclaimed director, known for his work on films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has cast Stuart Martin and Fra Free, actors he previously collaborated with on his recent Rebel Moon sci-fi franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production will take place in various locations, including Iceland, Colombia, and Los Angeles, and is scheduled to last until November 2023. Snyder expressed his enthusiasm for this project in a statement, saying, “The idea of taking camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me.” He describes The Last Photograph as a “meditation of life and death,” reflecting personal experiences and the exploration of profound themes through visual storytelling.
The film, based on a screenplay by Kurt Johnstad, follows the journey of an ex-DEA operative who returns to the mountains of South America in search of his missing niece and nephew, whose parents, diplomats, have been murdered. A washed-up war photographer, the only witness to the killings, teams up with the operative to uncover the truth and find the missing children.
Snyder has long desired to bring this story to life, although the project has faced delays due to his involvement in larger blockbuster films. His recent collaboration with Martin and Free on Rebel Moon has provided an opportunity to finally move forward with The Last Photograph.
After his tenure at DC Studios, which included titles like Man of Steel and Watchmen, Snyder transitioned to Netflix, where he released Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire in December 2023, followed by Part Two – The Scargiver four months later. Both films received mixed reactions upon release, leading Snyder to remark on the strong responses to his work. He noted to Metro, “The reactions to my movies tend to really be these big… overreactions. I’m not mad about it, but it just is what it is.”
With The Last Photograph, Snyder aims to explore personal themes while providing audiences with an intimate cinematic experience. As production begins, many will be watching closely to see how this passion project unfolds.
