Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM Recognized for Community Health Innovations

Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM has been recognized for his significant contributions to community health in Australia. The general practitioner from Bacchus Marsh has dedicated his career to making medical knowledge accessible through innovative initiatives like the Pub Clinic and the Ladies Lounge. These programs aim to provide a casual environment for health discussions, promoting regular check-ups among local residents.

Dr. Sadhai established the Pub Clinic in 2008 after observing a troubling trend: many men in their forties and fifties were dying without having received medical check-ups for years. He decided to bring healthcare directly to the community, setting up the program in a local pub in Bacchus Marsh, where he has practiced for over 20 years. “Most blokes don’t generally listen to what you say if you simply sit them down and force them to listen,” he explains. “In the Pub Clinic, we don’t have PowerPoint presentations – it’s just a casual gathering where we can have a beer and a chat.”

Since its inception, the Pub Clinic has seen remarkable growth in attendance, with nearly 130 people participating in the most recent event in 2025. Dr. Sadhai has noted anecdotal evidence suggesting that this initiative has encouraged more men to visit their general practitioners for necessary tests and check-ups.

Building on the success of the Pub Clinic, Dr. Sadhai launched the Ladies Lounge, which addresses women’s health concerns in a similar relaxed setting. This extension reflects his commitment to inclusive healthcare, ensuring that both men and women in the community have access to vital medical information.

Before these initiatives, Dr. Sadhai was already a familiar face in the area. He began volunteering as a medic for the Bacchus Marsh Football Club in 2005 and later provided medical support for the Victorian Football League. “To this day, I am still in touch with many of those players I met a good 15 years ago,” he shares. His experience on the field was fulfilling, but it is his work in palliative care that he finds most rewarding. “In palliative care, you very quickly develop a deep understanding of your patients,” he explains. “It is a privilege and an honour to take care of patients in that context.”

Receiving the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) serves as a reminder of the support Dr. Sadhai has received from his family, particularly his late father, Dr. Jay Sadhai. The elder Sadhai moved to Australia from South Africa in 1977, where he practiced medicine for three decades while actively advocating against apartheid. “He’s the biggest inspiration in my life, not only in terms of how he worked but also in terms of what he did for his community,” Dr. Sadhai emphasizes.

The legacy of Dr. Jay Sadhai lives on in his son’s initiatives, which have fostered strong relationships between healthcare providers and patients. This approach not only saves lives but also strengthens the community of Bacchus Marsh. Through programs like the Pub Clinic and Ladies Lounge, Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM continues to make a meaningful impact, underscoring the importance of accessible healthcare for all.
