Residents of East Gippsland now benefit from improved access to specialist healthcare services following a new partnership between Epworth HealthCare and The Centre in Bairnsdale, which was officially launched on October 18, 2023. This collaboration allows patients to receive specialist consultations locally, eliminating the need for lengthy travel to Melbourne.
Partnership Aims to Meet Growing Demand
The new initiative positions Epworth specialists at The Centre, providing in-person consultations complemented by telehealth options for follow-up care. This development comes in response to a significant increase in demand for specialist healthcare in the region, particularly among families, elderly residents, and those in rural areas who typically face extended travel times for appointments.
According to Carolyn Donchi, owner of The Centre, this partnership directly addresses the challenges faced by local residents. “For many residents, travelling to Melbourne for specialist appointments can be stressful and costly. Having Epworth specialists based in Bairnsdale removes that barrier and improves access to care closer to home,” she stated.
Local Member of Parliament Tim Bull attended the launch, emphasizing the importance of this initiative for the community. The presence of renowned specialists in the area is expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility for those who have historically struggled to obtain necessary medical attention without incurring substantial travel costs.
Community Impact and Future Plans
This partnership not only aims to facilitate easier access to specialists but also seeks to foster ongoing community health improvements through consistent engagement. The combination of in-person and remote consultations is designed to provide comprehensive care without the logistical difficulties often faced by patients.
At the launch event, Dr. Jonathan Robin, a representative from Epworth HealthCare, highlighted the organization’s commitment to serving regional communities. He stated, “We are dedicated to making specialist care more accessible, and this partnership is a significant step towards ensuring that our expertise reaches those who need it most.”
Other notable attendees included Dr. John Cuttingham, Fiona Adcock, Ashley Wheeler, and Clare Bohan, all of whom are part of the Epworth team set to provide services at The Centre.
As the partnership evolves, further enhancements in service delivery are anticipated, promising to make healthcare not only more accessible but also more efficient for East Gippsland residents. With ongoing support and community engagement, this initiative stands to create a lasting positive impact on the health and well-being of the local population.
