Heart Foundation Encourages Healthier Grand Final Day Snacks

The Heart Foundation is promoting healthier snacking options for Australians as the sports season heats up, particularly with the Grand Final festivities approaching. On September 24, 2025, the organization released guidelines encouraging fans to enjoy traditional game day foods without sacrificing their heart health.

With recent data revealing a rising trend in processed food consumption, the Heart Foundation is advocating for simple, nutritious swaps that can be made during the upcoming celebrations. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), approximately one-third (31 percent) of daily energy intake in Australia comes from discretionary foods, including processed snacks and sugary treats. This marks a significant 20 percent increase in median daily snack food consumption compared to figures from 2011-12.

Heart-Healthy Alternatives for Game Day

Rachel Mackey, a registered nutritionist with the Heart Foundation, emphasizes that healthy eating can fit seamlessly into social gatherings like Grand Final events. “Events like the footy are all about coming together, and food is such a big part of that,” she said. Mackey encourages fans to serve a variety of options, combining flavour with nutrition.

To help make game day meals healthier, Mackey suggests several simple swaps. For burgers, she recommends using lean mince or plant-based patties made with fibre-rich legumes. “Beef burgers with lean mince or veggie burgers are a great option,” she advised. Opting for wholegrain buns and substituting mayonnaise with Greek or natural yoghurt can further enhance the nutritional value.

Tacos also present a versatile and health-conscious choice. Mackey suggests preparing pan-fried fish tacos for a source of healthy fats and lean protein, or bean tacos for a vegetarian twist. “Load your tacos with zesty salsa and veggies of choice,” she added, promoting the idea of colourful and nutritious toppings.

Creating a Vibrant Grazing Board

Pizzas are another staple at gatherings, but they can be made healthier too. Mackey recommends using wholemeal flatbreads topped with a variety of vegetables, lean proteins, and flavourful herbs. “Not only does wholemeal flatbread boost fibre, but this recipe is quick to make when you have a crowd to feed,” she noted.

To replace traditional bowls of chips, a vibrant grazing board can serve as a healthier snacking option. “Fill your grazing board with colour and flavour. Think fruit, veggie sticks, olives, nuts, cheese, and wholegrain crackers or bread,” Mackey said. This not only provides a range of healthy choices but also makes for an appealing presentation.

The Heart Foundation offers numerous recipes that are both quick and affordable, aiming to inspire healthier eating habits during social occasions. For more ideas, fans can visit the Heart Foundation’s online store and download the free Fresh Entertaining recipe e-book.

As Australians prepare for the excitement of the Grand Final, the Heart Foundation’s recommendations serve as a timely reminder that nutritious choices can coexist with beloved traditional foods. With a few adjustments, fans can enjoy their favourite snacks while taking care of their heart health.
