Legionnaires’ Disease Hospitalizes Three in Sydney CBD Area

Three individuals have been hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease after spending time in the Sydney Central Business District (CBD) and the nearby Clarence Street area. The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District has issued a warning for anyone who visited these locations between December 9 and December 18, 2023, to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with this severe respiratory illness.

The warning follows reports that three unrelated individuals developed Legionnaires’ disease after their visits to the affected areas. According to Mark Ferson, acting director of the public health unit at the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, the source of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed, and it remains possible that the cases are not connected.

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease can manifest up to 10 days after exposure and include fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath. If untreated, these symptoms can lead to severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia. Ferson emphasized that those most at risk include elderly individuals, as well as people with pre-existing lung conditions or other serious health issues, including smokers.

Investigation Underway to Identify Source

Outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease typically occur when Legionella bacteria, found in environmental sources such as soil or contaminated water, become aerosolized and inhaled. In response to the recent cases, NSW Health is collaborating with the City of Sydney to test cooling towers in the area, as these structures can be potential sources of contamination.

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by infection with the Legionella bacteria and is not transmitted from person to person. As health authorities work to identify the source of this outbreak, the public is urged to monitor for symptoms and seek medical attention promptly if they experience any related health issues.

Health officials continue to stress the importance of awareness and early intervention, especially for those in vulnerable populations. The situation remains under close observation as further investigations unfold.
